Reading Assessment Database - Summary Chart of Early Reading Assessments for PreK-3

The essential cognitive elements of the reading process have been outlined in the Cognitive Framework of Reading. To assist educators in organizing their assessment practices around the cognitive framework, we've created a way to easily search for published early reading assessments that specifically test skills and knowledge outlined by the cognitive framework of reading.

Every published reading assessment appropriate for use in grades preK-3 has been summarized in SEDL's Reading Assessment Database.

How to use this page

1) On this page, the reading assessments have been summarized in two tables, depending on whether they are criterion-referenced or norm-referenced assessments.

2) Re-sorting the list of assessments by Cognitive Element
When you use your mouse to select a framework element (click on the vertical element name) at the top of either table, the assessments are re-ordered such that all of the assessments that can be used to measure development in that cognitive element are clustered at the top of the table.

Since no single assessment tests all of the elements outlined in the cognitive framework of reading, this ability to sort tests with a single click of the mouse makes it easy to find complementary assessments that can be combined to provide a more complete profile of a child's reading development with a minimum of redundancy in assessment.

3) Finding out about a particular assessment
To view a detailed description of a particular assessment, simply click on the name of the assessment.

4) The Reading Assessment Clipboard:
If you would like to keep track of reading assessments that interest you, you can add them to your "Reading Assessment Clipboard" for later printing. You even have the option to e-mail the details about the assessments to yourself or others.

• To view the clipboard, click on the large clipboard image to the right.
• To add an assessment to the clipboard, click on the tiny clipboard next to the assessment name as seen in the list of assessments below.
