The positioning of this paper at the end of this book is curious, as it provides a thoughtful and eloquent rationale for the instructional approach -- it would seem better to provide this overview at the beginning.

What Really Matters for Struggling Readers
|
Author: Richard Allington Published: 2001 ISBN: 0-321-06396-1
|
Cost: $28.00
|
Supports these Cognitive Elements of Reading: General Reading Information, Reading Comprehension, Language Comprehension, Background Knowledge, Vocabulary, Fluency
Description:
This is the third in a series of books, and while the others focused more on developing foundational skills (phoneme awareness, word recognition skills, etc.), this one goes further to address the issue of developing fluency and reading comprehension skills.
Notes: The title of this book is somewhat misleading. On first examination, it would seem that foundational skills such as phoneme awareness and letter knowledge and decoding skills do not matter for struggling readers because they are not addressed in this book. However, as Allington says in the preface, he does believe those things are important -- they are only omitted from this book because they have been so thoroughly covered in his other books.

Supports these Cognitive Elements of Reading: General Reading Information
Description:
This book is intended to distill and interpret large amounts of research evidence related to reading and reading instruction. Further, implications for practice are described, and specific popular reading programs are examined.
Notes: This book's simultaneous focus on research and application, and its critical examination of "reading programs" will make this a very useful information resource for educators.

Supports these Cognitive Elements of Reading: General Reading Information
Description:
This is a resource book for teachers of young readers -- it contains everything from the abstract (such as the "eight principles of literacy learning") to the concrete (such as ideas for specific classroom activities).
Notes: This is described as a companion volume to Guided Reading, but it certainly stands alone. This book focuses more on skill building strategies than Guided Reading does, and this book provides extensive rationale for recommended instructional strategies.
