This collection of articles previously published in the Harvard Education Letter focuses on changes in thinking about professional development and the role of teachers in their own learning. Originally published from 1989 through 1997, the articles depict the teacher as a practitioner who has both a role and a responsibility to examine her teaching practice and work collaboratively with other educators to bring about improved student learning. The collection includes interviews with Linda Darling-Hammond and Robert Kegan and articles by Helen Featherstone, Anne Lewis, Katherine Merseth, Adria Steinberg, and others. The emerging paradigm of professional development presented in the articles moves away from a "one size fits all" approach to a coordinated program that is based on identified student needs and encompasses a variety of types of opportunities for teacher learning.
