Teacher Effectiveness – Equitable Distribution

The Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC), in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Education hosted the 9th Annual Title II, Part A "Advancing Teacher Quality in Georgia" Conference March 12-14, 2012, in Savannah, Georgia. Over 270 educators participated in the conference. The Southeast Comprehensive Center provided technical assistance to the GaPSC in the development of the program and agenda, identification of concurrent sessions and associated speakers, and networking with the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality (TQ Center) and the Southeastern Equity Center. This annual equitable distribution conference focuses on achieving equitable distribution of highly qualified, highly effective educators in Georgia's schools and districts.

September

SECC and Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) staff continued to discuss the PSC spring 2013 conference. Dates for an initial planning committee meeting will be identified in October. Resource information regarding a TQ Center webinar, "Teacher Preparation Program Evaluation for Accountability and Improvement," was provided.


August

Conference calls to initiate planning for the Georgia Professional Standards Commission’s (PSC) 2013 equitable distribution conference were conducted in August with SECC and PSC staff. Members of the planning committee and topics of interest were identified. Dates for an initial planning committee meeting in September were explored. Information on the SEDL briefing paper, Teacher Preparation Programs: Research and Promising Practices, and the TQ Center’s webinars, Measuring the Growth of Students Participating in the Alternate Assessment and Evaluating Teachers of English Language Learners was provided.


July

SECC and Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) staff discussed PSC’s continued focus on equity for Fiscal Year 2013, including the PSC fall regional trainings, Georgia’s enhancement of the HiQ2 system, and the PSC Spring 2013 conference. New online resources for building better principal evaluation systems also were shared. A follow-up conference call is scheduled for August 6, 2012.


June

On July 3, 2012, SECC and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission discussed future directions for SECC technical assistance in 2012–2013. A follow-up conference call is scheduled for July 23, 2012.


May

Next steps are continuing to be discussed between the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and SECC concerning follow-up work on the Georgia equitable distribution project.


April

No new work on the Georgia Equitable Distribution project occurred in April. Follow-up work on the 9th Annual Title II, Part A Advancing Teacher Quality in Georgia Conference will be initiated in June 2012.


March

The 9th Annual Title II, Part A "Advancing Teacher Quality in Georgia" Conference was held on March 12–14, 2012, in Savannah, Georgia. Over 270 educators attended this annual meeting, which was hosted by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). Presenting at this meeting were local, state, and national experts on the topic of equity in schools, with a focus on equitable distribution of highly qualified, highly effective educators for all students. SECC staff facilitated two concurrent sessions, which focused on engaging stakeholders to advance teacher quality.


February

The Equitable Distribution Conference planning committee, of which SECC is a member, matched the equity plan indicators with proposed concurrent conference sessions, as well as finalized logistics for the conference, which is scheduled for March 12–14, 2012.


January

SECC worked in partnership with the Professional Standards Commission, Southeastern Equity Center, and the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality (TQ Center) to initiate planning of the 2012 Equitable Distribution Conference.
