Louisiana’s Literacy Initiative – Ensuring Literacy For All (ELFA)

Ensuring Literacy For All is implemented in schools with the highest population of students at-risk of achieving successful literacy outcomes. ELFA focuses on preparing students in grades PK-4 to become skilled readers and writers but during the 2011-2012 school year, the primary focus was on third-grade literacy outcomes. A key feature of ELFA is providing targeted professional development to districts and schools to improve literacy outcomes.

This project is in the following state: Louisiana.

Previous Work Updates

2012

April

SECC staff had a planning meeting with the Region 1 field staff of the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) to outline areas of support and technical assistance for the targeted schools in Region 1. Specific topics discussed consisted of (a) reviewing our accomplishments to date, (b) planning our next steps based on progress monitoring data available, and (c) setting support goals for Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers during their transition to the Common Core State Standards. Unfortunately, SECC staff and the Region 1 field staff will not be able to continue with the ELFA work or address the identified areas of needs at the targeted school sites due to the LDOE’s budget cuts, which have eliminated the field staff’s position effective May 4, 2012.

March

SECC staff attended Louisiana's professional development session for third-grade teachers. SECC staff also provided technical assistance to the LDOE Region 1 field staff with conducting grade-level meetings for third-grade teachers at various elementary school sites. Specific topics addressed were grouping and analyzing DIBELS mid-year benchmark data and the explicit instruction of reading foundational skills, vocabulary, and comprehension.
