Previous Work Updates

2012

August

MDE’s school improvement specialists who have been working with SECC and CII staff on the implementation of the Indistar system (called Mississippi SOARS in the state) will deliver the regional trainings in September. SECC staff has provided assistance in planning these sessions, but the MDE and SECC feel the specialists have the capacity and skills to deliver the training for the department.

July

On July 9, 2012, MDE received approval of its ESEA Flexibility Waiver. Instead of a School Improvement Symposium, MDE will conduct regional Indistar action plan trainings in September. SECC will continue to work with the MDE regarding ways in which SECC staff may provide technical assistance with these trainings.

May

In May, SECC staff provided technical assistance to the SCDE by providing recommendations during an onsite monitoring visit to one middle school and one high school in the state. SECC staff also participated in a School Improvement Grant meeting with other Project 180 Council members and provided recommendations for category rates and feedback from the onsite monitoring visits.

April

During April, SECC staff participated in a peer-to-peer conference call between the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE), Kentucky School Improvement Grant representatives, and the U.S. Department of Education. Staff also assisted SCDE representatives with on-site monitoring visits to one elementary and one high school.

March

SECC staff assisted with planning the March SIG Project 180 Council Meeting. During the meeting, SECC staff provided feedback on the SCDE developed SIG monitoring instrument, assisted with establishing the state's SIG monitoring calendar, and participated in goal-setting work with the SIG unit. Staff also attended, participated, and facilitated technical assistance sessions on data-driven decision making and instructional conversations for the SIG schools.

February

In February, SECC staff remained in communication with the SCDE SIG office in preparation for the March SIG 180 Council meeting.

January

In January, SECC staff assisted the SIG 180 Council in planning for a technical assistance (TA) session for SIG schools. Staff also conducted a breakout session for school personnel on the selection of a teacher/principal evaluation model. During the SIG TA session, participants engaged in discussion on where they were in the process and identified next steps for their work. School attendees also were provided overviews of the: (a) U.S. Department of Education SEA SIG Wavier, (b) ADEPT (South Carolina's system for assisting, developing, and evaluating professional teaching) and ESEA Wavier Principle 3 (Supporting Effective Instruction and Leadership), and (c) South Carolina's Teacher Advancement Program (TAP) model.
