School Improvement Grants (SIG) 1003(g)

In collaboration with the Center on Innovation and Improvement, SECC staff are working with the Mississippi Department of Education's (MDE) Office of School Recovery to implement a system for managing and evaluating the elements of SIG projects that address requirements of both the Turnaround and Transformation models. SECC staff assist in building the capacity of MDE staff to use the system, known as Mississippi Star, to support low-performing districts and schools.

2012


May

SECC staff met with Office of School Recovery (OSR) personnel and state implementation specialists to facilitate the development of a rubric designed to assess the quality of implementation of SIG indicators. OSR and SECC staff also collaborated in planning for the school improvement institute to be held in July.


April

In May, SECC staff, in collaboration with staff from the Center on Innovation and Improvement,will provide a work session on leading and lagging indicators and will assist staff from the Office of School Recovery in planning a summer institute for School Improvement Grant schools.


March

SECC evaluation staff met with personnel from the Office of School Recovery to provide technical assistance on the SIG renewal process and revision of the SIG monitoring and accountability plan. SECC staff also participated in discussion with staff from the Federal Programs Office on the use of Mississippi Star in other program offices. The team also engaged in preliminary discussions of the state's summer SIG conference and a modified monitoring process for SIG recipients who will be in their third year of implementation during the 2012–2013 school year. A May work session on leading and lagging indicators' reports was scheduled and will be held in collaboration with the Center on Innovation and Improvement.


February

SECC staff assisted the Mississippi Department of Education with on-site monitoring of improvement actions in six schools across the state. Technical assistance was provided in summarizing findings from these visits and connecting this work to the Mississippi Star online tool for monitoring School Improvement Grant implementation.
