Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Instructional Support Videos

A new SEDL video series is helping to demystify the Common Core State Standards for mathematics. More than 45 states and territories have adopted the Common Core State Standards, designed to prepare students for success in college and the workplace. State education agencies are working to implement the standards by 2015. The new video series is being developed by SEDL's Southeast Comprehensive Center in collaboration with the states in its region. The videos address CCSS math standards that the states have identified as needing support to help their districts, schools, and teachers understand and implement them. Each video, ranging from 5 to 20 minutes, focuses on one math standard, clarifying its meaning in plain English. Many of the videos also incorporate examples and illustrations to deepen understanding. Although not intended as guides on how to teach the standards, the examples and illustrations can be adapted for instructional use. The video series will cover all grade levels and would benefit any educator implementing the Common Core State Standards for math. Program associates in SEDL's Improving School Performance unit are spearheading the work. The Southeast Comprehensive Center is also considering a similar video series on the Common Core State Standards for English/language arts.
