Annotation:
This paper reports proceedings from a national conference of the Cross City Campaign for Urban School Reform. It convened grassroots community organizers, educators, funders, and parent leaders to discuss issues related to community-based school reform initiatives. Participants defined key indicators for documenting community-based school reform work and emphasized the need to address race and class issues. They also highlighted key issues that need to be addressed to continue moving the field forward, which include funding for community organizing and leadership development, sustaining school-related organizing work, linking schools with broader community work, getting and using good data for decision making, learning from colleagues in the field, and addressing issues of race and class. Exemplary local reform efforts are also highlighted. This paper gives a snapshot into the kinds of school-related community organizing that is currently being conducted in the United States.
