Annotation:
This study examines the mathematics performance of students enrolled in the 21st Century Community Learning Center afterschool program in seven public elementary and middle schools in St. Louis during the 1998-99 school year. It found that students in the 21st Century program performed better than regular-day students on post-test math exams. The researchers administered pre-post test math exams developed by the St. Louis Public School District to students in October 1998 and May 1999. The entire student body (452) in all seven schools took the pre-test and 278 students took the posttest. Of the 278 students with both pre and posttests, 61 students were enrolled in the 21st Century program. Typically, 21st Century afterschool programs are part of Community School programs that involve families and communities in their design and operation. Because of the high interest in afterschool programs among parents, community members, and school personnel, and the number of resources available through public and private sources, evaluation of student school performance in 21st Century Community Learning Center afterschool programs can provide useful information when considering implementing such programs. The researchers, however, caution that cause and effect relationships should not be inferred based on these findings because the students were not randomly assigned to the 21st Century program.
