Annotation:
This resource provides a general discussion of the barriers to diverse family involvement among culturally and linguistically diverse families. It encourages school personnel to be more sensitive to family issues and provides tools to help them do so. Recommendations to help increase family involvement with culturally/linguistically diverse families of children with disabilities are provided, along with reasons why connecting with diverse families of children with disabilities is difficult. School administrators and teachers should develop a wide range of strategies to facilitate involvement and decision making with parents. Literature regarding diverse school-family communications is summarized, and strategies for creating a family advisory council or forum with diverse families are provided. Although this resource focuses on involving diverse families of children that have disabilities, the best practices and strategies identified may be helpful across student and family populations.
