Annotation:
This report describes the use of voice-messaging technology to facilitate the exchange of information between teachers and parents. More specifically, it introduces a system where teachers can leave daily voice messages for parents about studentsÕ progress or current curriculum. Parents can use the voice message system to respond to the teacherÕs messages. BauchÕs Transparent School Model is based on the idea that for parent involvement to increase, an effective means of communication needs to be in place. Schools that used the Transparent School Model had higher levels of parent teacher participation/interaction and showed positive effects in family attitudes, as well as improved student scores on reading and math standardized tests. The report indicates a direct relationship between parent participation and the amount of information they receive from school. The technology described provides a good example of how tools can increase effective communication between teachers and parents. Some evaluation results are provided and may be useful to school administrators considering the adoption of communication tools to increase parent involvement.
