Frank Martin

Frank Martin is a Program Associate with SEDL's Disability Research to Practice (DRP) program. His interests include research dissemination and utilization, communication theory and practice, ethnicity and culture, health communication, and community-based participatory methods.

Experience/Education
Prior to joining SEDL, Mr. Martin was Director for the Information Dissemination and Educational/Academic Liaison (IDEAL) Core, part of the Excellence Centers for Eliminating Ethnic and Racial Disparities (EXCEED) research initiative at Baylor College of Medicine and the Houston Center for Quality of Care & Utilization Studies, a VA Health Services Research and Development Center of Excellence. EXCEED is funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

Mr. Martin developed and implemented the IDEAL Core and served as the lead designer and co-investigator for the IDEAL Core's centerpiece program: "How to Talk to Your Doctor... and get your doctor to talk to you!," a community education forum on doctor-patient communication. Numerous articles and presentations have been published on the "How to Talk to Your Doctor" program since its inception in October 2000, including publication in the journal Patient Education and Counseling; Virtual Mentor, the online journal for the American Medical Association; and the Foundation for Accountability (FACCT) Fourth Annual Briefing: Who's in the Driver's Seat? Leading Efforts in Consumer-centered Health Care. The "How to Talk to Your Doctor" program is being replicated at the University of Pittsburgh, University of Michigan, and Florida A&M University.

Prior to being recruited to Baylor College of Medicine, Mr. Martin served as an information and training coordinator for Access to Independence, Inc., an independent living center (ILC) in Madison, Wisconsin. He also served as a program specialist at the University of Wisconsin's Waisman Center on Developmental Disabilities. At Waisman Center, Mr. Martin was a major contributor to Cultural Diversity and Disability, an annotated bibliography designed for researchers, service providers and families. The project was funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Developmental Disabilities.

Mr. Martin holds an MS degree in Family and Consumer Journalism, with an emphasis on health communication, from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. In addition to his work at SEDL, Mr. Martin is a reviewer for the scientific journal, Health Promotion Practice.
