Turning Around Underachieving Schools

All children deserve to attend high-quality schools that provide them with a sound education and prepare them for success. SEDL works closely with states and school districts to help them turn around underachieving schools. Our strategies for improving school performance focus on all levels of an education system. The goal is to help schools achieve gains in student learning that are significant and sustainable.
SEDL’s team of specialists provides technical assistance, professional development, research, and resources to help educators at all levels identify specific needs, learn research-based strategies, develop and implement improvement plans, and determine the impact of their work. For example, we utilize resources from national content centers to help state departments of education and intermediate service agencies increase their capacity to assist underachieving schools. We have helped districts align their local curriculum, instruction, and assessment to state standards. We have also provided professional development to districts and schools to help them build learning communities and boost student achievement in reading, math, and other core content areas.
