Knowledge Use
What It Is
The term “knowledge use,” along with the related terms “knowledge utilization” and “knowledge translation,” refers to ideas and strategies for helping knowledge move from the abstract into real-world application. In many contexts, including SEDL’s work, the term refers specifically to moving research outcomes into practice. Knowledge use looks beyond the mere spread or distribution of research knowledge to explore, describe, and support its actual application by those who need it.
Why It Matters
In fields such as education, where innovation and research are intended to lead to meaningful improvements in teaching and learning, abstract knowledge has little value until it is actually applied in practice. Similarly, disseminating research outcomes in the narrow sense of “getting the word out” doesn’t necessarily ensure they’ll be used. We can mail a brochure or publish an article, but how do we know who will get the mail or the magazine or read beyond the first sentence? If people do read the brochure or article, will they have enough contextual knowledge to understand what we’re saying? Will they find our message credible, especially if it contradicts their prior understandings? The field of knowledge use provides conceptual frameworks and concrete strategies to help address the many complexities of moving research into practice.
What We Do
SEDL works with researchers to help them get their research results into the hands of those who can use it. We accomplish this through information dissemination, technical assistance, and other services. We also partner with organizations such as the Campbell Collaboration and the Cochrane Collaboration to provide training and technical assistance for researchers.
