Past Work

Family and community has been a focus of SEDL’s work for decades. In the 1980s, we provided guidance and tools to help business, schools, and communities support divorced working mothers and families with two parents working in their child’s education. We also conducted field-based research on building successful school-family-community partnerships. Our work often focused on helping eliminate obstacles that prevented lower income and minority families communities from becoming involved in their child’s education.

More recently, we evaluated and refined the process for Collaborative Action Teams, designed to help develop a partnership between home, school, community, and students at the local level. These teams identify pressing issues in the school community and take action to address those issues with the purpose of promoting student success. We also created a database called the Connection Collection, which provides the literature and research needed to foster successful and productive relationships between family, schools, and communities.
