In SEDL’s early years, we participated in the groundbreaking national Project Follow Through, a large-scale study that examined academic and mental health characteristics of 10,000 students who had participated in Head Start.SEDL also developed the Collaborative Action Team process that enables schools and communities to work together on educational, economic, and social issues. As a result of this process, communities such as the West Texas community of Balmorhea were able to establish school-based health clinics. In the case of rural Balmorhea, the clinic was the town’s only health facility.
