Current Work

The National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning: SEDL leads the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning, which helps afterschool practitioners develop high-quality, balanced programs through research-based resources and professional development. The National Partnership also oversees three randomized controlled trials that evaluate the benefits of promising afterschool interventions on student achievement.

Professional Development for 21st CCLC Grantees: SEDL also delivers professional development designed to assist 21st CCLC in building long-range plans for program operations and sustainability; networking; and sharing experience and knowledge with one another.

California Afterschool Demonstration Sites: SEDL is developing a process to select high-quality afterschool demonstration sites for the California Department of Education. SEDL will work with these sites to design and implement resources to be shared with other afterschool programs.

Partners

U.S. Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education: The National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education.

National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST): CRESST is one of the partners in the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning. Besides its nationally recognized work in supporting rigorous evaluation and assessment in educational settings, CRESST has conducted one of the best known out-of-school-time program evaluations in its examination of the LA’s BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow) program, which serves 23,000 students in 147 elementary schools in Los Angeles. CRESST’s principal responsibility in the National Partnership is managing the identification and validation of promising and exemplary practices.

Learning Point Associates: Learning Point Associates is one of the partners in the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning. Learning Point is a nonprofit educational organization with more than 20 years of direct experience working with and for educators and policymakers to transform education systems and student learning. Learning Point’s principal responsibility in the National Partnership is helping develop tools for afterschool practitioners as part of the Afterschool Training Toolkit.

Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL): McREL is one of the partners in the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning. McREL, as a national leader in standards-based educational practice, applies its 40 years of knowledge and experience in the area of mathematics teaching and learning to working with students from diverse backgrounds and in a variety of settings, including afterschool.

Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL): NWREL is one of the partners in the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning. A substantial portion of NWREL’s work through its regional Comprehensive Assistance Center focused on reading instruction through the national Reading Success Network. In partnership with the Bank Street College of Education, NWREL also provides training and technical assistance to Corporation for National and Community Service projects across the nation focused on literacy and education, with a special focus on tutoring for reading. For the National Partnership, NWREL specializes in the area of literacy.

SERVE Center at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (SERVE):
SERVE Center is one of the partners in the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning. SERVE Center works closely with state education agency staff, local sites, and other regional contacts to help identify and validate effective practices and to provide training and technical assistance. For the National Partnership, SERVE Center specializes in the areas of science and homework.

WGBH Educational Foundation (WGBH): The WGBH Educational Foundation, which is affiliated with WGBH Public Television in Boston, is one of the partners in the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning. WGBH is America’s preeminent public broadcasting producer, the source of one third of PBS’s prime-time lineup, along with some of public television’s best-known children’s programs. WGBH has been recognized with hundreds of honors, including Emmys, Peabodys, duPont-Columbia Awards, and two Oscars. WGBH’s principal responsibility in the National Partnership is providing media production services.
