SEDL's work is guided by a 20-member board of directors. There are four representatives from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Experience/Education
Ms. Johnson currently serves as the President of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). In 1999, Ms. Johnson was appointed by the Governor of Louisiana to fill an unexpired term on the BESE. She then ran successfully for the seat without opposition. Ms. Johnson chairs the Louisiana High School Redesign Commission, and the Louisiana Recovery Authority Education Task Force. She also serves on the Bring Back New Orleans Commission, the Louisiana Accountability Commission, the Louisiana Blue Ribbon Commission, and the Louisiana Reading Task Force.
Ms. Johnson holds a bachelor of science in microbiology from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
